Spring Beaver Damage | Seattle/King County | Trapping & Nuisance Management

Certain areas of King County, Snohomish County and other parts of Western Washington hold very abundant Beaver (Castor canadensis) populations. They are the largest rodent in North America and can thrive in ponds, lakes, rivers, streams, and other natural aquatic environments. Found both in urban and suburban locations, they’re capable of causing mass amounts of damage if not controlled properly.

In Spring, Beavers are more active than any other time of year. They are breeding and having litters, constructing/repairing new dams, and working on their lodges/huts. This is the most common time for property owners to notice they have a Beaver issue. The most obvious sign of Beavers living on your property is a large “hut” made out of sticks.

Usually the Beavers enter and exit underwater through an entrance that leads directly into these huts. If this is not the case, they almost always will be living in what is referred to as a “bank den”. Some people do not ever see a lodge or bank den and still see signs of Beavers around, most commonly through freshly planted trees or other landscape vegetation being chewed on and/or hauled off overnight. It is not uncommon for homes along Lake Washington in Seattle or Bellevue to experience these issues. Beavers are very keen to their surroundings and will promptly hone in on freshly planted specimens that are much tastier than the native vegetation that surrounds their dwellings. Do not let Beavers hang around too long or they can decimate an entire new landscape in a matter of hours if not dealt with properly.

The most efficient way of controlling Beavers in the Seattle area is through trapping and proper wildlife control. A highly successful and humane style of trap is the Koro Beaver Trap. It captures the Beaver in a humane manner. These traps have been used for scientific research purposes for nearly 100 years!
